2014 UNSIGNED ONLY MUSIC COMPETITION
ANNOUNCES JUDGING PANEL AND MENTORS

Neon Trees, David Crowder, Rosanne Cash, Of Monsters and Men, Dustin Lynch, Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC) And More Sign On As Judges

January 23, 2014 - Unsigned Only Music Competition today announced its judging panel and mentors for the 2014 competition, which is now accepting entries. Judges consist of iconic recording artists and journalists, each bringing unique expertise in a wide variety of contemporary music genres. Mentors include the top echelon of record company executives, ranging from label Presidents to A&R reps.

Designed for solo artists, bands, and singers who are not signed to a major label, Unsigned Only's goal is to find an outstanding, talented performing artist: a band, singer, or solo artist. The Grand Prize Winner will be awarded $10,000 in cash (plus additional prizes) and one-on-one mentoring by an elite group of record company executives. First and Second Place winners in each of ten categories of contemporary music will also be chosen. Original and cover songs are accepted. Winners will be announced in August, 2014.

"We are honored that so many high-profile, influential artists and music journalists have signed on to be judges," says Founders/Directors Candace Avery and Jim Morgan. "Additionally, the mentors this year are equally impressive, coming from labels such as Republic Records, Capitol, Sire, Warner Bros., Atlantic, Elektra, RocNation, Word, and more. We are thrilled that they want to participate, and we know that the Grand Prize winner will benefit greatly from the opportunity to network with them."

Last year's Grand Prize winner was country artist Wes Mack for his song "Duet." Wes commented, "Winning Unsigned Only proved exceptionally beneficial, and it actually helped us push the song higher in the charts (it peaked at #9 on the Canadian Country Billboard Chart). The mentoring sessions were great, and Unsigned Only has been a phenomenal experience and one I feel very lucky to have had."

Judges include:  Neon Trees; John Oates (Hall & Oates); Of Monsters and Men; 3 Doors Down; Dustin Lynch; Black Francis (The Pixies); Rosanne Cash; Delbert McClinton; David Crowder; Craig Morgan; Robert Smith (The Cure); Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC); Aaron Shust; G. Love; Jason Gray; Rapsody; Alt-J; The Mountain Goats; Anthony DeCurtis (Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone); Josh Jackson (Co-Founder and Editor-In-Chief, Paste Magazine); Chris Richards (Pop Music Critic, The Washington Post); and more to be announced.

October 7, 2013 - Due to extremely high demand, the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) has extended the deadline for entering songs until November 4, 2013. ISC is open to amateur and professional songwriters, and entries are accepted online through the ISC platform, Sonicbids, ReverbNation, Broadjam, or through the mail. One of the most prestigious and respected songwriting competitions in the world, ISC gives away a total of more than $150,000 in cash and prizes (including $25,000 cash for the Grand Prize winner alone), and gives songwriters 22 different categories to enter their songs into. Not only do ISC winners receive great prizes and media recognition, but winners also receive a lot of industry attention. Many previous winners have gone on to great success and garnered record deals, publishing deals, licensing deals, and even Grammys. Previous ISC winners include: Gotye and Kimbra (best known for their Grammy winning, million selling single "Somebody That I Used To Know), Passenger, The Band Perry, Gin Wigmore, Bastille, and many more.

50 years of the Audio Cassette and Ray Dolby

There's been 2 very siginificant events in the last few weeks

1/ It's the 50th anniversary of the Audio Cassette developed by Philips

2/ The passing of a man named Dr Ray Dolby

These 2 events are inextricably linked and one can't be mentioned without the other.

In the early 60s Philips developed a compact cassette based tape format primarily for the recording of speech. (a dictation device). Little did they know at the time ( in fact they failed miserably at securing a reasonable patent for the format that must have cost them billions!)  that it would become a primary carrier of music for over thirty years.

The problem as previously mentioned was that the fidelity of audio cassette was barely enough to record voice well, let alone the extended frequency response needed for music. This prompted a guy by the name of Ray Dolby to look at ways of improving the noise floor and quality of recordings that could be placed on to a 1/8th inch tape running at 1&7/8th inches per second (by comparison modern reel to reels ran at 30 IPS). And in 1965 Dolby Laboratories (visit the Dolby website to learn more) was formed and out of all the research and hard work was the noise reduction system that we know so well as "Dolby B".

There are now literarlly billions of items that use the Dolby technology, from domestic audio players such as cassette and minidiscs to professional applications in cinema and recording studios.

Dr Ray Dolby truly changed our audio and video world. Here's a fantastic tribute to the man
