Owen Gibson, media correspondent Friday October 7, 2005 The Guardian

DVD pricing and piracy

Promote Media Group and Procopy prides itself on providing excellent value for money and honest service and offers our clients pricing that is hard to beat.

However we're constantly being bombarded with price matching quotes that seem too good to be true......Our maxim is always to look into these matters and find out why some prices are far below the market rate, afterall our livelihood depends on it!

Lately people have obtained DVD pricing from brokers that clearly are not manufacturing within Australia...how do we know that? Well the pricing is 40% below our bulk buy price and therefore we phone around to see what we can do to match these "great" prices.

So what is happening? Some brokers are sending the work out to Chinese and other overseas companies to obtain these prices...So "is that a problem you ask?" Well, 1, yes 1 plant in China is currently licensed for DVD manufacture and 9 in Taiwan.....(Check here if you'd like to know which one http://www.licensing.philips.com/licensees/database/licensees.html )

So you have to wonder why people would use them......Do they like supporting facilities that make the majority of their money from piracy? Do they like paying facililtes funded by black money from who knows where? do they like undermining the Australian industry that employs Australians, invests in Australia and keeps the profits in Australia? Undermining the R&D for new technologies?

As we all know sometimes the best price doesn't reflect the true cost.........

So what can you do... Well, don't just ask if your discs will be manufactured in Australia or by an "Australian Company", ask for the IFPI number of the plant that manufactures your discs....This is a registration number that can be authenticated.

Get a few quotes and see what the average price is, anything too low deserves to have more questions asked.

What are the ramifications?

1) On a National scale the industry needs to be supported in order to grow and provide a personal level of service.

2) You could be made liable for unpaid royalties - Yes, that's one of the ways these plants cut costs - they simply don't pay the required royalties...

3) The broker could be fined or banned.....

4) You may get a substandard project that doesn't work as expected.

We hope that'll you understand that while we'll do our best to match prices sometimes we simply won't, our reputation is based on honesty, reliablilty and great service.
